Overview

SIN NAM HUAT - Tanjung Bungah stands as a humble yet beloved chicken restaurant nestled in the heart of Tanjung Tokong, Pulau Pinang. Located conveniently at 42, Jalan Fettes, this spot captures the essence of traditional Malaysian roast meat stalls, echoing a legacy dating back to 1968. It’s this rich heritage that flavors each dish served here, from their famed roast pork to the fragrant chicken rice that has earned loyal local fans.

The restaurant’s main draw is undoubtedly its roast pork and char siu—a duo that’s celebrated for caramelized edges, tender textures, and a glaze that is subtly sweet yet deeply savory. These dishes sit perfectly atop fluffy, white rice that plays a silent but vital role, absorbing the rich sauces and enhancing the overall meal experience. The oil rice, in particular, is often highlighted as a flavorful companion, crafted to carry every nuance of the roast's juices.

Chicken rice here maintains a classic profile: straightforward, satisfying, and true to its kopitiam roots. The rice is aromatic and well-seasoned without overwhelming the palate, while the chicken favors a tender bite, though some may find its seasoning leaning toward the saltier side. Complementing the meal is a simple, light soup that refreshes the taste buds and balances the richness of the roasted meats. The humble presentation and laid-back atmosphere amplify the experience, inviting diners who appreciate authenticity over extravagance.

Sin Nam Huat’s space reflects its no-frills approach—a modest, roadside setting where one can watch the chefs expertly prepare each portion. This visibility lends a genuine charm and transparency that draw in those who seek honest, home-style cooking rather than polished elegance. It's a place where community vibes and nostalgia blend, catering primarily to locals and visitors who crave traditional Penang tastes without the fuss.

Though the drink selection remains unremarkable and the venue lacks air conditioning, these aspects fade against the backdrop of well-executed roast meats and comforting staples. Parking can be a challenge given its roadside location, but the promise of the signature char siu and hearty chicken rice makes the effort worthwhile.

In summary, SIN NAM HUAT - Tanjung Bungah captures an enduring culinary culture through simple, expertly crafted dishes. It’s ideal for diners who prioritize flavor authenticity and traditional ambiance over refined dining comforts. Whether you come for the caramelized char siu or the fragrant chicken rice, this spot offers a genuine taste of Penang’s rich roast meat heritage.

Sin Nam Huat Fettes Park is part of a loose group of roast meat stalls. Not a trademarked brand, not a franchise, name is reused by relatives / ex-workers. Founded by Li Liantian in 1968 with the original stall in Paya Terubong, there are now several stalls across Penang using the same logos and website. The char siew is the best. More caramelisation, slightly sweeter glaze and softer texture!

Sin Nam Huat Chicken Rice Restaurant in Tanjung Tokong is one of the many branches you can find around Penang, and it’s a familiar name for locals who enjoy a simple, no-frills chicken rice meal. This outlet has a more traditional kopitiam feel, as it is not air-conditioned, unlike some of their other branches that offer a more comfortable dining environment. Still, it has its own casual charm and is usually a convenient spot for a quick meal. Food-wise, the chicken rice here is generally satisfying. The rice is tasty and fragrant, with enough flavour to enjoy even on its own. The soup served alongside is also quite nice, light yet flavourful, making it a good complement to the meal. As for the chicken, the texture is decent, but personally I found the meat to be a little on the salty side. While some diners may enjoy the stronger seasoning, I would definitely prefer it to be less salty so the natural taste of the chicken can stand out more. The drinks are average and nothing particularly special, but they do the job. Overall, despite a few minor drawbacks, I still accept the chicken rice taste here, and it remains a decent option when craving Sin Nam Huat’s style of chicken rice in Tanjung Tokong.

Nice place. Oil rice is nice. Best is their Char Siew (BBQ Pork), their roast pork is so so, roast chicken also so so. Drinks not so nice. Overall is okay and good. Enjoyed it. Will go definitely go back for their Char Siew. Not a halal place.

Simple and delicious chicken rice. Nothing fancy, just some tables, you can see the chefs cooking on the spot, cutting and serving. It’s a great experience. However since it’s a bit on the roadside, you might need to be strategic to find a good parking spot.

All the way to Penang for chicken rice?? One must be joking! Well joke not , this is one of penang famous chicken rice chain. Tried their chicken , roast pork and stew egg. Roast chicken was tasty with enough marination and the mixture with the soy sauce was good. Roast pork to my surprise was the star with its crispy skin and tender juicy meat. Egg was just an egg. The rice was fragrant and not too oily. Only drawback was the chilli sauce. Was told the soup here is their speciality as well. Next time will try.

The franchise is actually really nice. Especially the Chai Boey. Very generous portion too and will definitely come back again.

The food is great! Roast duck, chicken, pork and bbq pork is sold here and the quality is very good! Get here early because they will sell out by 1pm! Just be warned that there is no air conditioning here so it gets warm, which is why I rated the atmosphere 4 stars.
